Camp Possibilities is an overnight camp for children with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 8 and 17, with campers ages 8 to 15 participating as campers and 16- and 17-year-olds taking part in the Leadership-in-Training program. Camp Possibilities gives children with diabetes the youthful experience of summer camp. The mission of Camp Possibilities is to enrich and support the lives of children, families and young adults living with type 1 diabetes through year round programming, community building, and the camp experience.
The medical staff consists of pediatric endocrinologists and nurse practitioners, registered nurses, certified diabetes educators, registered dietitians and others, who collectively give well over $125,000 of their time, knowledge and service. Counselors and recreation staff are comprised of college students and professionals from the community. Throughout any given day at camp, children frequently interact with the medical staff and counselors, where personalized information about managing diabetes is shared with them. Camp Possibilities holds dedicated diabetes education sessions at camp that are intended in the spirit of providing support, information and encouragement to campers.
Camp Possibilities welcomes a diverse population and fosters an inclusive environment that is welcoming to all genders, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Camp Possibilities’ policy of non-discrimination seeks to guarantee that human rights are exercised without discrimination of any kind based on race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status such as disability, age, marital and family status, sexual orientation and gender identity, health status, place of residence, economic and social situation. Camp Possibilities maintains a zero-tolerance policy pertaining to use of abusive language, violence and other inappropriate behavior including verbal and non-verbal harassment, physical harassment or assault, and sexual harassment or assault. Slurs, jokes, innuendos, or discrimination regarding a person’s race, religion, national origin, gender, handicap, or sexual orientation are not tolerated.
Campers must be up-to-date with all immunizations as required by the State of Maryland for school attendance. COVID-19 vaccinations are strongly encouraged but not required for campers or staff. Exceptions regarding required vaccinations may be considered for valid medical reasons only on a case-by-case basis and require a note from a physician or nurse practitioner, and religious exemptions are not accepted. A packing list is provided and is sent to each family prior to camp.
Camp Possibilities is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization established in 2002. Volunteers number over 100 and collectively give over 7,500 hours of their time to make camp happen.
