Calleva Adventure Programs was originally founded as a small summer camp after being dreamed up in 1992, and over the last 30 years the team has expanded into a wide range of adventure activities. The program’s mission is to get all people outdoors by providing safe, educational, and challenging experiences that promote personal growth, group cooperation, and leadership skills. Calleva’s leadership team includes founders Nick Markoff, Alex Markoff, and Matt Markoff. Calleva is ACA (American Camp Association) accredited. Calleva’s team includes Olympic kayakers, top tier wilderness professionals, seasoned educators, high energy camp leaders, committed conservationists, and creative trades people and artists. Calleva is nationally known as an innovative force in outdoor adventure and education and offers innovative outdoor education and adventure programs with dynamic and mobile programming that introduces participants to rivers, trails, parks, and rocks in the region, along with small-scale sustainable farming, farm-to-table operations including weekly Pizza Nights, and Markoff’s Haunted Forest, an iconic fall event that draws fans from across the Mid-Atlantic. The program states that everyone is welcome at Calleva, and closed-toe shoes are required at Calleva camp.

Calleva Adventure Programs supports a variety of community organizations and initiatives, including conservation efforts with the Alice Ferguson Foundation in the C&O Canal National Historic Park and outdoor adventure activities, campouts, and Eagle Scout projects with Boy Scouts of America. The program provides outdoor adventure experiences such as rock climbing for City Kids Wilderness Project students and has partnered with Diversify Whitewater to facilitate weekend paddlesports events. Calleva and the Fairfax County NAACP’s Fairfax Chapter created a joint project called Connecting the Community with Nature, a grant-funded program teaching Leave No Trace principles to students. Calleva works with Girl Scout leaders to create experiences aligned with scouting values and collaborates every summer with Horizons of MoCo to create day camp experiences that include rock climbing, rafting, and farming. The program has partnered with Soul Trak Outdoors to expand access to kayaking, has supported Team River Runner by providing equipment, instruction, and other support, offers kayaking experiences in support of Wilderness Kids Alexandria, and has provided a challenge course experience as a kick-off to the Wilderness Leadership & Learning WILL-Lead program.
