Club Lab Rascals Virtual STEM Camp is a virtual STEM camp where kids take part in hands-on labs such as creating rain clouds out of household items and building a balloon rocket. Some activities use household items, including the materials for creating rain clouds.
• Ages: 3–11 years old
In 2019, Club Lab Rascals was created. The camp offers super fun STEM activities for kids ages 3–11, and its classes are called labs instead of traditional classrooms or sessions. These labs emphasize exploration, experimentation, and discovery, and the camp is fully interactive with no webinars, so children can ask questions and help throughout the lab. The program describes its experience as high quality with a challenging curriculum, and Lab Rascals hosts virtual STEM camps every month, along with afterschool STEM club meetings for kids throughout Maryland.
Lab Rascals Founder Tondalaya (Tee) Takapu is an 18-year U.S. Airforce veteran and Cybersecurity Analyst. Tee is the founder of Club Lab Rascals and set out to close the opportunity gap, demystify and diversify the field of STEM. Tee created Club Lab Rascals after being startled by low minority representation in STEM fields, and kids of color will be surrounded with other young scholars like themselves in this program. The mission states that Tee aimed to create an approachable, affordable, and accessible space for all children to get excited about learning so that children like her own sons would diversify the next generation of STEM professionals.
Parent feedback about the program includes comments such as, “My son is very excited...says he wants to go back every day! Thank you for all your work!” and, “Thank you for blessing our little souls with your expertise, creativity, and organic love to pass the torch in STEM.
