The Pack also participates in community events and service projects such as Scouting for Food, Sweep the Creek, the Popcorn fundraiser, and marching in the annual Kensington Labor Day Parade.

• Schedule: The Scout year runs from September through May, with a monthly Pack meeting, Den meetings one or two times a month, and a monthly hike.
• Price: Annual fees are $185 to Scouting America and $20 to Pack 478.

All boys and girls in Kindergarten through fifth grade can join Pack 478, and boys and girls can join at any time from Kindergarten through 5th grade. The Pack is divided into Dens of boys or girls in the same grade level: Kindergartners are Lions, 1st Graders are Tiger Cubs, 2nd Graders are Wolves, 3rd Graders are Bears, and 4th and 5th Graders are Webelos. Lions participate with a parent or other adult family member, and Tigers participate with a parent or other adult family member and follow the theme “Search, Discover and Share.” The Lions program is described as simple and extremely flexible.

Cub Scouting in Pack 478 is an all-volunteer enterprise, and all Pack and Den leaders are parent volunteers. Each Den is led by a trained, adult leader. The Pack is based primarily at Oakland Terrace, Rock View and Flora Singer Elementary Schools. The Pack meets as a whole once a month, usually at Oakland Terrace, Flora Singer or Rock View Elementary Schools, and Den meetings are held in community centers, churches, and/or Den leaders’ homes.

Each boy or girl is expected to sell popcorn for the Pack’s annual fundraiser. Uniforms are required, and the same basic shirt can be worn each year, while the hat and neckerchief change each year. The Cub Scouting Youth Application and Health Forms (parts A and B only, no doctor required) must be filled out.

The Pack serves boys and girls throughout the Silver Spring, Kensington, and Wheaton areas. Pack 478 maintains a first-come, first-served fund for scouts in need of assistance paying dues, supported by its members and supporters. The Cubmaster of Pack 478 is Joe Altepeter ([email protected]).

According to the Pack’s mission statement, being a Cub Scout means being a member of a worldwide youth movement that stands for certain values and beliefs, and Cub Scouting is described as more than something to do and as being about the person a scout will become. One Pack 478 parent stated, “My child had a great experience and went on to Troop 439 and earned his Eagle Scout!”
