Calvert Nature Society Programs include a wide range of activities such as Summer Camp, School’s Out programs, homeschool programs, special events, kayak trips, outdoor art, campout activities, and hunting. The programs also offer topic-focused activities like Reptiles & Amphibians, Phenology, Parks For Pollinators, Monarch Watch, the Dragonfly Mercury Project, and online options such as webinars and other online programs. Participants can also take part in environmental programs for schools and groups, public programs, wildlife monitoring projects, and nature center operations.

Calvert Nature Society runs bird research projects including the Bluebird Project, Bluebird Trail, M.A.P.S., Prothonotary Warblers, and the Barn Owls Nest Box Project, as well as projects such as Orchid Conservation, Horseshoe Crab Survey, Habitat Survey, and the City Nature Challenge (2026). Facilities managed by the Calvert County Parks & Recreation Natural Resources Division that are connected with these programs are open daily from dawn to dusk. The organization offers internship opportunities for college juniors, seniors, and recent graduates at paid stipend or volunteer levels, with responsibilities that can include environmental programs for schools and groups, public programs, wildlife monitoring projects, and nature center operations.
Calvert Nature Society is led by a board and staff that includes Joyce Baki (President), Lisa Bierer-Garrett (Vice President), Kevin Frere (Treasurer), Bob Boxwell (Board Member), Jonathan Moreland (Board Member), Molly Sinclair (Board Member), and emeritus directors Lloyd Hepburn and Julia Cornellier. Additional leadership and staff roles include Karyn Molines (Division Chief and Ex Officio), Robin Madel (Ex Officio, Administrative Assistant & Secretary), Lydia Wells (Senior Naturalist), Tania Gale (Naturalist), Gene Groshon (Naturalist), Kim Curren (Naturalist), Sarah Godwin (Office Specialist), Jenny Yoder (Park Manager - Kings Landing Park), Brian Bussard (Park Manager - Flag Ponds Nature Park), and Ian Keeley (Park Supervisor). The board meets once a month to discuss strategy, project updates, and opportunities for growth, and board members participate in fundraising, attend events, and serve as ambassadors for Calvert Nature Society.
Calvert Nature Society’s mission is to focus on the protection and preservation of Calvert County’s natural heritage and the creation of an environmentally literate and aware community, through outreach initiatives and support of the Calvert County Natural Resources Division. The Society is a 501(c)3 organization. It supports the mission of the Calvert County Natural Resources Division and partners with Calvert County Parks & Recreation, Natural Resources Division. Community involvement includes sponsorships from businesses and individuals that support conservation programs, community events, educational initiatives, and recognition of nature enthusiasts and partners, with structured sponsorship levels that offer specific benefits and recognition. The Society also seeks dedicated individuals to serve on its board and engage in fundraising, attending events, and serving as ambassadors for the organization.
