About
Camp Puh’tok is a non-profit summer camp founded in 1942 by Brigadier Douglas G. Eldredge. Since 1942, Camp Puh’tok has offered children and families the chance to connect with nature and enjoy meaningful programs. The camp describes its approach as “Outdoor Discovery for All” and “Generations of Adventure... It’s In Our Nature.”
Camp Puh’tok’s mission is to unite youth and adults from diverse backgrounds and provide outdoor learning experiences that focus on the natural environment, history, and relationships with others. The program’s stated primary focus is youth development, with objectives that include teaching positive decision-making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence, problem-solving, appreciation and understanding of natural resources, leadership abilities, character, and responsible citizenship. Camp Puh’tok transitioned from a boys-only camp to a co-ed camp in the mid-1980s. In 2002, the camp’s land was permanently protected under the Gunpowder Falls Conservancy through a public-private partnership, and in 2007 it came under private ownership while continuing its mission to serve children from all socio-economic backgrounds through outdoor education. In April 2018, a partnership with the Y in Central Maryland began, expanding Camp Puh’tok’s reach to more families in the Baltimore area.
