• Ages: 3–18 years old
The Evergreen Heritage Center Youth Education Programs are part of the Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation, which was founded in 2008. The programs use an outdoor classroom on a 130-acre historic farm and expansive forest and include access to the Evergreen Mansion museum, the Evergreen Barn with plantation-era farming tools, and the Evergreen Coal Trail with historical coal-related sites. The programs serve over 10,000 individuals annually and include STEM and Humanities programs aligned with the Maryland State Curriculum. Program data report increases of 25 to 50% in student STEM and humanities literacy based on pre/post-tests. The Elementary Edibles gardening program serves pre-K through grade 5 students, who learn about, taste, and plant their own vegetables, with 95% agreeing to taste them and 70% or more liking or loving them. The Nature of Art program reports increases of 25–65% in art literacy and art appreciation based on pre/post-tests and surveys. Higher Education and Research activities provide real-world experience each year for more than 100 college students to gain marketable job credentials, and Professional Development activities show teachers how to integrate experiential outdoor activities into the curriculum.
The Evergreen Heritage Center is a historic Maryland farm dating back to before the Revolutionary War and is recognized by the Maryland Historical Trust (1976) and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2015). The Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation works with community members and partners to preserve history, conserve the environment, and provide educational opportunities in Western Maryland counties. The foundation and its partners have developed and participated in multiple award-winning programs.
Parent, teacher, and visitor comments describe the programs and site as a “fun learning experience” with “helpful, knowledgeable staff, clean facilities, and engaging activities,” and note “historical artifacts beautifully curated” and a “great place to learn about native plants & the history of the area.” One parent reports that a child “went here for their summer camp and had a blast! 10/10,” and a third grade teacher notes that “the kids always enjoy using their creative minds with limited rules/directions.”
