Delmarva Discovery Academy offers educational programs through the Delmarva Discovery Museum that invite children to learn about the local history, culture, and environment of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Each Delmarva Discovery Academy program is connected to museum exhibits that explore the history, culture, and environment of Maryland's Eastern Shore in 16,000 square feet of exhibit space.
The Delmarva Discovery Museum, which houses Delmarva Discovery Academy programs, is in a historic Art Deco brick building that was originally built in 1922 as a car dealership. The museum was conceived as a place where visitors could explore the rich history and natural world of the Delmarva peninsula, consisting of the Eastern Shores of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. The museum describes itself as a cultural hub and notes that it welcomed 944 visitors for a Grand Reopening with support from donors, partners, volunteers, and supporters. The museum’s mission is to foster an appreciation of Delmarva’s unique natural and cultural heritage through education, exploration, and enjoyment. The staff is described as dedicated to preserving the history of Delmarva and educating about the environment and the animals that live there. The leadership team includes Executive Director Christy, Animal Husbandry Supervisor Chelsi, a Museum Store Assistant and Gift Shop contact, Board Officers Frederick Grant (Chairman), Wayne Outten (Vice Chairman), Kerrie Bunting (Secretary), and Tom Terry (Treasurer), as well as Board Members Russ Blake, Cindy Lloyd Holland-Linda Johnson, Connie LeCompte, Creston Long, Cass Mullen, Susan Pusey, and Brandy Trader, with Directors Emeritus Bill Kerbin and founder Barbara Tull.
