About

BYM Camps offers hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, organic farming, creative arts, group games, and group work as part of its summer camp programs. It operates as a family of four summer camp programs called Catoctin, Opequon, Shiloh, and Teen Adventure, which are gender-inclusive summer camps and communities. The camps are operated and stewarded by the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

• Ages: 9–17 years old

The mission of BYM Camps is to build a vibrant, diverse, and youth-centered community that welcomes all with open arms, nurtures campers’ ability to both find themselves and be themselves, creates opportunities for campers to step into community leadership, and cultivates life-long connections to wild spaces and to each other. All of the BYM Camps are intentionally and explicitly values-based, incorporating the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) into every aspect of the program. Catoctin, Opequon, Shiloh, and Teen Adventure are gender-inclusive communities where community members are supported to be in housing and social groupings that most align with their gender identity.

The Fire Circle is described as a sacred space and the center of spiritual and communal life where campers and staff gather every day for 10–20 minutes of reflective stillness. This daily gathering is modeled off of, and often referred to as, Quaker Meeting for Worship, where campers and staff are invited to speak out of the silence as they are moved.

BYM Camps teaches and practices the principles of Leave No Trace, both at camp and when out on wilderness adventures. All construction and land management decisions are made with sustainability, stewardship, and restoration at their core. The camps regularly accommodate a variety of dietary needs such as omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free diets, and are able to provide for campers with various allergies.

The organization states that it builds vibrant, diverse, and youth-centered camp communities where everyone can find their light and shine their light, and that it offers transformational camp experiences for 9–17 year olds. BYM Camps invests in partnerships with youth-facing organizations throughout the mid-Atlantic region that have similar values around youth empowerment and experiential education, and invites families to join Community Work Days at camp in the spring. Some of the camp properties are available for rental when camp is not in session.

Camp Property Manager David Hunter is part of the leadership team. A camp parent shared that their daughter “glows when she talks about her time at camp” and said that the camp provides “a very special place for growth, learning, self expression, and friendships.”
