Founded in 1878, YWCA Central Maine began as a service provider for women immigrating to Lewiston to work in the mills. YWCA Central Maine states that all of its services, including aquatic programs, work toward gender and racial equity through accessible and culturally appropriate resources for health and wellness, recreation, childcare, and advocacy. YWCA Central Maine reports that it takes care of up to 110 children daily and that it served over 21,000 meals to children in its care last year. The organization’s mission is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, and it describes its programming as building community by strengthening inter-cultural relationships and valuing the needs and contributions of all of its members.
