About

The Birch Rock Camp Tutoring Program is part of Birch Rock Camp’s offerings and includes Library & Tutoring Support alongside traditional camp activities. Campers take part in activities such as archery, jumping in the lake, and wilderness trips as part of the broader camp experience.

• Ages: 7–16 years old

Since 1926, Birch Rock Camp has offered boys ages 7 to 16 a summer camp experience. The camp describes its mission as giving boys a rousing summer camp experience that builds self-confidence, skills, and responsibility, with a focus on enjoyment and stewardship of the natural world and the simplicity of traditional camping. Its motto is “Help the Other Fellow,” which the camp states encourages boys to grow in generosity, integrity, and mutual support. Birch Rock Camp is described as an old-fashioned camping program with cherished traditions and a warm, cooperative community focused on traditional camp activities and cabin life, where boys are challenged to take responsibility for themselves and be attuned to the needs of others.

Birch Rock Camp notes that campers and counselors gather from around the United States and the world, and that the camp remains small, with no more than 90 boys per session and a camper-to-counselor ratio of 3 to 1. The camp states that counselors recognize that some children are shy or anxious and do not force kids into the spotlight, instead encouraging cautious children and creating opportunities for them to participate when they are ready, and that counselors often see quiet observers become enthusiastic participants over a session. The camp environment is described as intentionally designed to support boys as they grow into new experiences at their own pace, and the directors and staff describe themselves as partners in parenting.

Birch Rock Camp lists several programs, including Cubs (New Campers, 7–12), Campers (7–15), Senior Campers (16+), Junior Maine Guides (14+), Maine Wilderness Adventure (15+), Counselor in Training (17), Family Camp, and Outing Club, and notes that Library & Tutoring Support is part of the camp offerings. The camp states that campers get a break from devices and screens and that Birch Rock Camp has been a special place for boys for generations. Birch Rock Camp is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is an accredited member of the American Camp Association.

The camp describes a comprehensive 10-day staff orientation prior to campers’ arrival. The wellness team is staffed by a resident nurse practitioner, one or more EMTs on campus, wilderness first responders, and a consulting child psychiatrist. Staff are trained every year in Duty of Care (protocols for protecting the health, safety and well-being of everyone at camp), specialized activity skills, American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and Lifeguard Certification, as well as emotional wellness and best health practices. The Brewster Health Lodge provides health care 24/7, and campers and staff are required to have an annual medical examination prior to the season, with health screenings upon arrival, before wilderness trips, and before departure.

Meals at camp are described as home-cooked and well-balanced, including fruits and vegetables. Meals are served family-style in the Lodge or buffet-style outdoors in the Grove, with snacks offered in the afternoon and a camp fruit bowl kept full during the day. The camp encourages campers to try something new at each meal and encourages everyone to stay hydrated by filling water bottles at the Tiki Bar drink station.
