About
Kids Camp includes activities such as hiking, swimming, ziplines, creating arts and crafts, and campfires. Children at Kids Camp also take part in group activities that allow them to unplug and form bonds with staff and other children. Trained medical professionals at Kids Camp dispense medications, perform dialysis, and accompany campers who require hemodialysis to a partner dialysis clinic for one treatment during the camp week.
• Ages: 8–16 years old
• Schedule: August 3–8, 2025
Kids Camp is for children 8–16 years old who have chronic kidney disease, are currently on dialysis, or who have received a kidney transplant. The goal of Kids Camp is to provide children with chronic kidney disease the opportunity to enjoy a summer camp adventure in the outdoors with recreational activities and new friends. Children interested in attending are required to have medical clearance from their pediatric nephrologist or primary care physician, and all required medical documentation is outlined during camper registration. Campers requiring hemodialysis must have a treatment on the Sunday before camp and on the Friday after returning home from camp. Peritoneal dialysis takes place in a sterile environment in the Health & Wellness Center and is performed four times per day by experienced volunteer nurses.
Many volunteers at Kids Camp are nephrologists, nurses, and social workers from the Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Michigan Medicine’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and Corewell Health’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, and these trained professionals watch over campers around the clock and see to their medical needs. Transportation services to and from camp are provided in partnership with local transportation and shuttle companies, with National Kidney Foundation of Michigan staff members accompanying campers, and arrangements to use these services must be made in advance during camper registration. Families who use transportation services receive designated drop-off and pick-up locations before camp week, and the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan does not transport campers to and from their homes. Kids Camp is supported by the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.
