About
Akula Taekwondo offers Taekwondo classes that include martial arts training, self-defense skills, Olympic style poomsae (forms/kata), and sparring according to Olympic Taekwondo rules. The program follows the World Taekwondo (WT) system and uses World Taekwondo rules with the exception that they do not kick to the head. Students train barefoot on a martial arts mat in a studio that also has a lobby, and they follow Taekwondo etiquette and studio rules such as hanging jackets, placing shoes on racks, and keeping fingernails and toenails clipped.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Saturday, with weekday hours from morning through evening and Saturday daytime options; 4-week and 6-week trial sessions are available
Akula Taekwondo requires an Introductory Lesson as a private appointment before a student joins group classes. Children must wear a uniform and belt to receive the stripes required to advance to the next belt, and from Memorial Day to Labor Day they may wear an Akula t-shirt instead of the uniform top, while it is always acceptable to wear the full uniform. For a trial class, children are asked to wear comfortable athletic clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt in warmer weather or leggings/track pants and a t-shirt when it is cooler.
Akula Taekwondo offers programs for kids, teens, and adults, with adult classes for ages 16 and up. The school presents Taekwondo as an Olympic sport and notes that it is practiced at major universities. The program focuses on building confidence, discipline, fitness, leadership, and self-defense skills, and it emphasizes child safety and academic excellence.
Akula Taekwondo is described as a World Taekwondo school that is a home for kids and teens in Novi, Wixom, South Lyon, and nearby areas to grow. The mission statement explains that the school creates a positive and supportive martial arts training environment, provides individualized attention tailored to each student’s abilities and goals, and aims to help students train for success in all of life’s endeavors. The mission also states that instructors challenge students appropriately, take pride in prioritizing safety and academic excellence, and encourage students to aim high, break through comfort zones, and accomplish big goals.
Owner, Founder and Head Instructor Master Joseph Tegler leads the program, along with Mr. Shashwath Adap and Ms. Grace Elling. Akula Taekwondo instructors draw on training in Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Tang Soo Do, and Hapkido to offer a well-rounded curriculum. They are described as outstanding martial artists who strive to motivate, support, and encourage their students, lead by example, and teach with patience and enthusiasm while combining respectful discipline with a friendly, hands-on approach. The instructors focus on physical discipline, allow participants to progress at their own level by setting and achieving individual goals, and are described as having an authentic dedication to the art and sport of Taekwondo.
Parent and student testimonials describe Akula Taekwondo as a great place to learn Taekwondo where children love to attend classes and learn at their own pace. One parent notes improvement in a child’s ability to focus and follow directions after a few months. Multiple reviewers describe Master Tegler as kind, patient, humble, and an excellent instructor who builds self-confidence, character, and skill in students through mental and physical discipline, and one reviewer calls the dojo the best in Novi.
