Rutherford, who was elected to the State of Michigan's Recreation and Parks Association in 1968 and died in 1976. The Friends of Rutherford Pool took over upkeep and daily management in the early 2000s and closed the pool after the 2011 season before it was rebuilt and reopened in May 2014.
The Friends of Rutherford Pool state that they remain committed to ensuring that the pool provide swim lessons, exercise programs, and a safe, enjoyable recreational experience to all Ypsilanti area residents no matter their age or ability, and that all are welcome to enjoy Rutherford Pool. Funding assistance for the original construction came from the Federal government through a general revenue sharing program, and the Friends of Rutherford Pool later raised over one million dollars through grants and donations from the State, County, foundations, local businesses, and residents.
