About

Bloomington Karate Center offers training in Hapkido, Taekwondo, Song Moo Kwan traditional style Taekwondo, American Kickboxing, kickboxing, and self-defense. Classes include physical exercise and have included training for both amateur and professional fighters, as well as Hapkido training for law enforcement.

The Bloomington Karate Center has been teaching students continually since it first opened in April 1974 and is described as the oldest and largest martial art school in Bloomington. The school promotes and passes on the art and science of Hapkido and American Kickboxing and combines Hapkido and Taekwondo in its courses so students can follow a complete self-defense and exercise program. Students at Bloomington Karate Center can earn world-recognized ranking in both Hapkido and Taekwondo. The Bloomington Karate Center was first opened by then 8th Degree Master Jun Sun Hyon, later led by Grand Master Tim Mullin, and in 1998 C.B. Bunkholt, a 5th Degree and K.I.C.K. World Super Featherweight Kickboxing Champion, became the active head instructor; today the school is run by a coordinated effort of Grandmaster Mullin and his Black Belts. All instructors are certified and accredited by The World Hapkido Federation and The USA Hapkido Central Association, and the instructor group includes professionals from fields such as medicine, business, law, finance, programming, education, art, and law enforcement. Bloomington Karate Center is run solely by volunteers, and tuition is kept down and instruction is offered without contracts because instructors are not teaching as a way to make a living. The school has been training amateur and professional fighters for over 30 years and has been home to several national and world champions at the professional and amateur level, including World Super Featherweight Kickboxing Champion C.B. Bunkholt, and it continues to train fighters for competition, conditioning, and as part of overall martial arts training. Bloomington Karate has been working with law enforcement agencies in both basic and advanced applications of Hapkido for many years and offers discounts to law enforcement officers. Bloomington Karate is the Midwest headquarters for Kick International, which serves as the National Governing Body in North America for the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), and Bloomington Karate was voted Readers' Choice Award for Best Martial Arts School 2023. The school is a sponsor of the Rescue Our Kids program and has stated that Hapkido is built on the participation of everyone at all levels of age and ability and is for either sex, with an emphasis on self-improvement, self-control, respect, confidence, and self-respect through a program of physical exercise and understanding of oneself and one’s relationship to society.
