The Crystal Recreation Department operates within a city whose mission is to improve and promote the quality of life for all Crystal citizens and to provide municipal services in a cost-effective, innovative, and professional manner. The department is part of a community that includes amenities such as the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center, Crystal Community Center, parks and trails, well-groomed sports fields, and the redeveloped Crystal Shopping Center. The City of Crystal has been a Home Rule Charter City since the City Charter was adopted on August 23, 1960. Since 2017, the City of Crystal has run the Neighbors Recognizing Neighbors awards program, which honors residents who help out, volunteer in the community, or assist in emergencies, with chosen nominees receiving their award at a council meeting in connection with National Volunteer Week. The city participates in the Cities for Safe and Stable Communities coalition, a nonpartisan group of Minnesota local governments addressing operational and economic instability impacting cities across the state. Crystal’s official newspaper for legal notices is the Crystal-Robbinsdale SunPost, where legal notices are published each Thursday. Crystal states that it remains a welcoming community where everyone, regardless of national origin or physical characteristics, deserves to feel safe, respected, and free from discrimination or harassment.
