Camp Birchwood has been championing girls since 1939. The camp’s mission states that it is a place where girls are embraced with love and support as they engage their whole selves in fun, meaningful activities in the outdoors, with kindness and respect described as hallmarks of daily life and campers encouraged to be their truest, most authentic selves. The program focuses on igniting girls’ self-esteem and fueling their confidence through six stated core values: Spend Time Outdoors, Discover Self-Confidence, Build Lasting Friendships, Learn From Real Role Models, Acquire Essential Soft Skills, and Celebrate Accomplishments. Campers are described as ditching gadgets and spending time outdoors, developing soft skills that emphasize collaboration, and being encouraged to challenge themselves and celebrate accomplishments. The camp is run by a team of women of varied shapes, sizes, and dispositions who run every aspect of the operation, and it is described as a “home away from home” where campers get comfortable fast. Travel to and from camp can be arranged via flights, coach bus, or car, with specified options and chaperones on certain routes.
One camper, Emily O., says, “At Camp Birchwood you can be yourself - you don’t have wear makeup or cool clothes. You can blurt out camp songs even if you’re off key and wear pajamas to breakfast. Every year I come home changed. Birchwood has really shaped who I am as a person today.” A parent, Therese M., describes Camp Birchwood as “truly the golden standard when it comes to summer camps” and notes that “the most unbelievable part was to witness how much my children matured over the two weeks.”
