Curtain Up Theatre Camp
Minnehaha Academy North Campus, 3100 West River Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55406
About
Curtain Up Theatre Camp focuses on the full process of putting on a musical, including singing, dancing, acting, and learning about the behind the scenes side of things. Campers take part in acting games, auditions in singing, acting, and dancing, callbacks, learning a finale number, casting, a read through of the script, learning songs and choreography, blocking scenes, run throughs of the show, tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, two performances, and striking the set.
• Schedule: Teen Musical Intensive runs as an 11-day process from auditions through final performance and strike, with early days focused on auditions and casting, middle days on rehearsals, and final days on tech, dress rehearsals, and two shows.
The Teen Musical Intensive schedule begins on Day 1 with acting games and auditions in singing, acting, and dancing in the morning, followed by callbacks and learning the finale number in the afternoon. On Day 2, roles are announced in the morning, and the rest of the day is spent learning songs and choreography, blocking scenes, and ending with a group read through. Days 3–7 start each day with acting, singing, and dance warmups, then continue with learning songs, choreography, blocking scenes, and doing run throughs as show dates get closer. Day 8 is for tech rehearsals, with a flexible morning where actors are called for certain scenes while lights and sound are adjusted and actors rehearse when not on stage, followed by an afternoon tech run with lights, sound, and microphones. Day 9 includes a morning dress rehearsal with costumes, notes afterwards, lunch, time to fix notes, and another dress rehearsal. Day 10 is spent doing dress rehearsals and cleaning, then actors go home and return at a designated call time to perform Show #1. Day 11 focuses on Performance #2, with actors arriving at the theatre at a designated call time, getting ready, performing Show #2, attending a closing night party, and striking the set. Everyone registered for camp is cast in the show, and campers receive their script and a show t-shirt at check in on the first day. Camps are run through Minnehaha Academy, and all camps and performances take place at the Minnehaha Academy North Campus. The leadership team includes Zac as instructor and Julie, who provides help with solos. The camp states that it strives to create a fun environment where everyone can shine, with a commitment to both a high quality production and performance experience, and that it pushes campers to help them reach their highest potential so everyone gets a moment to shine. Curtain Up Theatre Camp also offers camps where kids can specialize in the behind the scenes side of theatre, and families can follow updates on Instagram at @curtainuptheatrecamp.
One parent, Khalilah C., describes Curtain Up Theatre Camp as a “wonderful summer program” that introduced her daughter to “the ins and outs of theatre” and mentions instructor Zac and “all the wonderful staff.” Camper Callie R. notes that she has done many theater camps and felt this camp had “the best bonding experience,” describes the show as “very professional for only two weeks of work,” and shares that Julie was helpful with solos while Zac kept campers on task. Another parent, Briana K., shares that her daughter’s first play experience was with Curtain Up Camp and that her daughter enjoyed getting to know new friends and finding her confidence on stage.
