Since 1973, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre has helped to create and cultivate the puppetry community in the Twin Cities and maintains a strong connection to the local puppet community. Its mission is to nurture creative empowerment through the joy and magic of puppetry performance and education. The organization serves people of all kinds and all ages, including children, tweens, teens, and adults, and offers free and low-cost arts events. It is recognized as a world-renowned theatre, known for large scale puppets and activism, and its programming is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. During its move to a new location, it remains active in the community through programs such as HOBT at Open Streets on Hennepin, House Party, Puppet Caravan from Lake to Hennepin, Storytime at Midtown Global Market, Community Moving Day, and Storytime in a community space near its new home.
