Special Olympics Minnesota’s mission is to create a new world of inclusion and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities by providing year-round sports training and athletic competitions, inclusive healthcare programs, leadership and advocacy training, and inclusive school programs. The organization provides health and wellness, leadership, and school programs that focus on community inclusion in addition to sports, and its events are competitive with athletes earning awards for placing in 1st–8th place. Special Olympics Minnesota is active 365 days a year and hosts nearly 100 events every year, including 47 events and competitions in 2024 that featured 16 different sports and provided 1,029,671 mission experiences through inclusive programs.

Special Olympics Minnesota partners with schools through its Unified Champion Schools program, and 357 schools in Minnesota use its programs and resources to foster inclusive environments. More than 10,800 students participated in Unified Champion School programming in 2024, and five Minnesota schools (Roosevelt, Cloquet, Rochester Mayo, Osseo, and Fairmont) were recognized as 2025 National Banner Unified Champion Schools. Special Olympics USA Games are scheduled to take place in Minnesota in 2026.
