About
theCoderSchool Camps and After-School Coding Programs offers Summer Coding Camps and ongoing coding sessions where kids work on video game development, robotics, Minecraft, Roblox, JavaScript with HTML/CSS, mobile game development, and Vibe Coding. Depending on the camp or class, students may create Python utilities or games, build websites, explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) by creating AI image recognition bots and coding algorithms that mimic computer intelligence, or focus on digital art and animation using MIT's Scratch. Some sessions involve game development with drag n' drop languages like Scratch or Snap, coding in Minecraft or Roblox environments, creating and publishing a Roblox game, building an Obby in Roblox Studio, coding and controlling physical robots, building robots, building a computer with Raspberry Pi, programming with Python or Scratch on Raspberry Pi, connecting and programming electronics and sensors with Arduino, designing and printing 3D objects, Java programming for advanced students with preparation for AP CS A–level coding, and mobile app development that runs on a simulator and an actual phone.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Each day camp runs for a full week, usually starting mid-morning and finishing early afternoon, with some camps offered as a half-day.
Founded in 2013 as an after-school drop-off and virtual program for kids learning to code and headquartered in Silicon Valley, theCoderSchool describes itself as the largest coding school in Silicon Valley with more locations on the way around the country. The core program uses a super-small student-to-teacher ratio, typically 2:1, with personalized lessons tailored to each child’s pace, interests, and goals, and camps generally have a low ratio of students per coach. Camp instructors are Code Coaches who have successfully gone through theCoderSchool's onboarding process and are coders who teach coding skills to kids, and each camp has recommendations around age and skill level, with details open to discussion based on a child’s coding experience. Camps include on-computer learning plus breaks with walks outside or other indoor activities, and at the end of the week, students give demos to show their work and critical thinking skills. Some locations may include a Raspberry Pi computer to bring home, and some locations will allow kids to bring their robots home at the end of camp.
TheCoderSchool’s mission states that kids learn to code and explore AI technologies that are becoming part of everyday life, with a focus on how AI works, how to use it responsibly, and how to think critically about technology, under the tagline “Learn to code. Change the world®.” The mentoring philosophy grew out of co-founder Hansel’s experience in 2013 trying to get his own kids to learn to code and deciding that people, not software, need to teach kids, with Wayne joining shortly after to focus on corporate schools and franchise support while Hansel built up the company. theCoderSchool is a longtime partner of the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), collaborates with CAC to run a national recognition program to identify a handful of top applications from thousands of CAC submissions, and presents CAC Top Apps as part of this partnership. It also runs a National Top App of the Month program, where each month theCoderSchool votes on the best app out of hundreds submitted nationwide by its students.
Parent testimonials describe kids learning STEM concepts via coding with customized curriculum, enjoying online classes and online camps, and being excited about Scratch camps and creating games. One parent from New Jersey notes 23 years of IT experience and calls out the customized curriculum, while parents from California, Georgia, and Connecticut describe their children having fun, learning a lot, and looking forward to returning.
