About
NMRC Programming & CAD Camps includes a Summer Programming Camp with hands-on training in programming FRC robots. The entry level two-day course brings students through the foundations of programming all the way to deployment and debugging of projects, with Level 1 as an introductory course using Java for command-based programming and CAD Level 1 as an introduction to Computer Aided Drafting using OnShape. In Level 1, students learn Java fundamentals, create commands for autonomous and teleoperations, and use those commands to create and iterate an autonomous program to navigate an obstacle course with a ROMI robot, while Level 2 is an advanced course where the group tackles problems brought by the students, including review of the command-based program model, use of a gyro, encoders, PID commands, time on motion magic and how to migrate that back into the command code, and vision (limelight) with motion profiling.

The first annual programming camp was in the summer of 2018, and the Northern Minnesota Robotics Conference was founded in 2017 by teachers and robotics coaches. When the NMRC was founded in 2017 by teachers and robotics coaches, its fundamental mission was to help students across the region grow by creating ways to provide them with opportunities. The camp is for NMRC students who will be in grades 9–12 for the upcoming school year, and it offers both Level 1 and Level 2 options for groups, with first-time attendees strongly encouraged to register for Level 1, and the option for first-time attendees to enroll directly into Level 2 with their coach’s or mentor’s endorsement. The overarching goal of these courses is to help prepare students for programming during build season by providing time with experienced instructors prior to build season, and the camp is also a chance for students to collaborate and connect with other teams so they have resources and connections for working together throughout the season, their high school career, and beyond.
The annual programming camp event receives support and financial contributions from Bemidji State University, Paul Bunyan Communications, and the North Country Vocational Cooperative Center. The NMRC is proud to be the first robotics conference officially recognized by the Minnesota State High School League and partners with R&J Broadcasting to present a weekly robotics show. The NMRC and Beltrami County Ag Association have teamed up to support the North S.T.A.R. Center Initiative, and the NMRC sends equipment out to support summer educational events like the BSU/NMRC programming camps and other similar activities.
