Quarry Hill Nature Center Programs & Camps offers activities such as Monarch Fest, where families can tag and release monarchs and take part in family activities and a Mexican Cultural Presentation. The program includes free Sunday Programs, bird banding, cave tours, Critter Spotlight sessions, Fossil Hunting Hikes, a Fall Festival, rock climbing, canoeing, nature games, crafts, day camps, trips, and other recreation activities. In the winter months, the program offers cross country skiing and snowshoeing with equipment available for rent.
• Schedule: Monarch Fest is held August 20 from 3:00–6:00 pm; Free Sunday Programs run weekly at 1:30 pm; Bird Banding takes place August 2 and September 6; Cave Tours run August 9 and 23 and September 13 and 27; Critter Spotlight is on September 20; Fossil Hunting Hikes are on July 19 and August 16; the Fall Festival is on September 12 from 11:00 am–5:00 pm; the nature center building is open Monday–Saturday 9:00 am–4:00 pm and Sunday and holidays 12:00–4:00 pm.
• Price: Monarch Fest is free for all ages; Fall Festival has free admission with activity tickets available for $1 each.
Quarry Hill Nature Center Programs & Camps is operated by the Friends of Quarry Hill Nature Center, a 501C3 non-profit environmental education organization that offers year-round classes, day camps, trips, and recreation activities. The mission of the organization is “Opening Eyes and Minds through natural science discovery.” The leadership team includes Pamela Meyer (Executive Director), Jill Danielsen (Volunteer & Program Coordinator/Naturalist), Jenny Doty (Office Manager), Lori Forstie (Public Relations & Outreach Coordinator), Carrie Nelson (Naturalist/Teacher), and Jenna Daire (Teacher & Naturalist). Executive Director Pam Meyer holds a degree in Earth and Space Sciences and Environmental and Outdoor Education with a minor in Geology and a current Minnesota teaching license for sciences in grades 5–12. Each year, over 7,000 students from Rochester Public Schools are scheduled for field trips to the Nature Center.
