About

Saint Paul Urban Tennis Youth Programs offers spring youth tennis lessons, summer lessons, tennis lessons during the year, and an All-City Tournament that includes singles and doubles divisions. Participants take part in beginner and intermediate tennis instruction with drills and practice, games, and six one-hour tennis lessons in the spring youth lesson program. The program also includes academic summer camps, community outreach programs, and the Employment PLUS (EP) program, where youth learn small business education by creating products, setting prices, marketing, and keeping track of profits.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Spring youth tennis lessons run April 13–May 30 with one lesson per week, and each spring session includes six one-hour lessons.
• Price: Cost $75 (Scholarships Available, no application necessary).

SPUT’s youth lessons follow the SPUT S.P.I.R.I.T. curriculum, which focuses on service, perseverance, integrity, responsibility, imagination, and teamwork, and the lessons are described as a fun and friendly community environment focused on developing a player’s tennis and life skills. The All-City Tournament takes place on July 18 for singles in 8U, 10U, and 12U divisions, on July 19 for singles in 14U and 18U divisions, and on July 25 for doubles in the 18U division, with all divisions checking in at 8:30am and matches starting at 9:00am, and every player is guaranteed at least two matches. Weather policies for rain, heat, lightning, and cold are communicated through a Weather Updates page and the Remind app.

Saint Paul Urban Tennis serves more than 2,000 youth each year through tennis lessons, academic summer camps, and community outreach programs, and provides more than 80 seasonal and part-time jobs each year for youth coaches and Employment PLUS students. More than $200,000 is invested back into the community each year through employment, scholarships, and financial assistance, and Rally Partners are monthly supporters who help youth across Saint Paul learn, lead, and grow on and off the court. The SPUT Store is operated as part of the Employment PLUS program, and proceeds from the store go to fund other Employment PLUS initiatives.

For summer lessons, children are asked to bring a water bottle and tennis shoes, and a hat may be helpful for sun protection. SPUT provides rackets on site for each child, and parents of children ages 5–8 years old are recommended to stay on site throughout the lesson period.

Parent and coach testimonials describe strong connections with coaches, appreciation for accessible and affordable programming, and the impact of SPUT on youth and alumni. Coaches and alumni mention experiences of mentoring, sharing knowledge and passion for tennis, and feeling a sense of belonging through SPUT programs.
