Summer Arts Camp offers art classes, workshops, and over 100 different camps that focus on multiple art forms and mediums. Campers take part in special sampler classes for 7–12 year olds, and all Summer Arts Camp projects are developed to be age appropriate according to the Lowenfeld stages of artistic development. All classes include a 15-minute supervised snack break, and children play games outdoors during snack and lunch breaks, weather permitting.
• Ages: 5–15 years old
• Schedule: Half-day and full-day options with 3-hour classes; morning sessions run 9 a.m.–Noon and afternoon sessions run 1–4 p.m., with a one-hour supervised lunch break for full-day campers; registration closes at noon the day before the class start date
• Price: Prices are listed with individual class descriptions; Art Center members receive a 10% discount compared to non-member prices, with membership discounts valid for 12 months; all tuition must be paid in full at registration; changes, transfers, and cancellations each incur a 10% administrative fee per class, with refunds and transfers following a stated schedule; late pickup fees are $10 per 15 minutes per child
Summer Arts Camp is part of the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, which offers 500+ classes and averages 3,500+ registrations each year, with programs for beginner to advanced learners. From its beginning more than sixty years ago, the Minnetonka Center for the Arts has focused on making visual arts available and accessible to people of all ages, interests, and abilities. Its mission is to provide teaching excellence, quality exhibitions, and cultural enrichment for people of all ages, interests, and abilities, based on the belief that the visual arts are indispensable to a healthy community.
Summer Arts Camp instructors are all college graduates who are either teaching artists or art educators, and camp assistants and interns are college students enrolled in studio art or art education courses. Scholarships based on financial need are available for campers, and registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Caregivers are asked to accompany children to and from classrooms, not drop children off more than 5 minutes before class, and pick them up promptly at the end of class.
Families may pack a bag lunch and snack for their child, and are asked to notify the Minnetonka Center for the Arts at least three weeks in advance if a child has food allergies or special dietary issues that may require cooperation from other campers. As some pigments and materials may stain, children are asked to wear clothing suitable for art activities and for outdoor play, with closed-toe athletic shoes recommended. Some ceramic and glass projects require firing and are typically ready for pickup about three weeks after class ends, and unclaimed items are recycled after September 30.
The Minnetonka Center for the Arts also presents seven major gallery exhibits a year, auxiliary shows throughout the facility, and a Student Show that features work created in the studios, with most artwork available for purchase and gallery exhibits always free and open to the public. Outreach programs reach thousands of people each year through more than 50 community partners on average, including Partners in Art exhibits at Ridgedale and art experiences for underserved audiences, schools, and work groups.
