John C. Campbell Folk School Dance Classes are part of a larger program that offers activities in craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography, writing, blacksmithing, pottery, woodworking, jewelry making, and weaving. Classes run for six hours a day in a non-competitive, small-sized format, and are taught by expert instructors. Over 800 classes are offered year-round in these areas.

The Folk School is a nonprofit organization and a founding member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. It was founded nearly 100 years ago and is recognized as a historical landmark, with founders inspired by the 19th century Danish folk school model. The Folk School is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Guests are welcome to tour studios and observe classes, visit a Craft Shop that is open seven days a week and sells handcrafted items by over 300 local and regional artists, and explore a History Center that shares the Folk School’s story and displays works by legendary and contemporary artisans. Olive’s Porch, a related location in downtown Murphy, offers workshops and additional activities. The leadership team includes Adrianna Vasquez, Student Services Manager, and E. Lane Gresham, Director of Marketing & Communications.
