About
The STEAM Program includes hands-on stations, STEAM activities, and hands-on science experiments through BASF Kids’ Lab with support from BASF volunteers. Students also take part in a NASCAR track experience that can include a van ride on the 1.5-mile NASCAR track, a track walk, and a visit to Victory Lane, with all on-track activities requiring a signed minor waiver. During the van ride, participants ride in a 14-passenger tour van that goes approximately 70 mph, experience the 24-degree banking, and must wear seat belts, with at least one adult riding with groups and the vans not going on the track if there is anything else on the track.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Daily STEAM program runs Monday–Friday year-round, with morning sessions from 9:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and afternoon sessions from 11:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m., each lasting about 3–3.5 hours
• Price: $23 per student, $12 per parent, and teachers are free
The curriculum is suited for 1st grade through high school and meets Common Core Standards, aligning with North Carolina and South Carolina common core standards. Force, motion, energy, and engineering are covered as students move through hands-on stations, use critical thinking skills to form a hypothesis, and work with racing design concepts. The program can accommodate a minimum of 30 students and up to 200–350 students per day, and parent chaperones may attend. Groups may bring a bag lunch or choose a pizza lunch option from Hungry Howie’s Pizza for an additional charge, and an outdoor covered pavilion with picnic tables is available for lunch, with indoor arrangements made if weather does not permit outdoor eating. If someone chooses not to participate in the van ride, that person can still go to the infield and visit Victory Lane.
Through a partnership with BASF Corporation, the program includes BASF Kids’ Lab with hands-on science experiments that connect experiments to real-world applications. Year-round programming includes daily programs, mobile visits to schools, and special events such as STEAM Expos. STEAM Expos are held during both the spring and fall NASCAR weekends and welcome nearly 4,000 children annually, highlighting a range of speedway partners such as local colleges and branches of the United States Armed Forces. The STEAM Program is recognized by the North Carolina Motorsports Association.
