Camp Cheerio began with the purchase of the original 50 acres in 1956 and officially opened for business in 1960. The program now hosts nearly 3,000 children every summer. Since the beginning, Christian spirit has been at the heart of Camp Cheerio, and the mission states that the camp strives to help campers grow in their relationship with God while they grow in their relationships with peers, counselors, and parents, while welcoming children of all backgrounds. The name “Cheerio” pays homage to former High Point YMCA General Secretary Edgar Hartley, whose favorite expression was “cheerio.” The infrastructure for camp was constructed with volunteer labor and financial assistance from local civic clubs, including the Y’s Men, Rotary, and Kiwanis Clubs of High Point. Camp Cheerio offers traditional summer camps, high adventure camps, and year-round retreats for families, including Family Camp weekends, Mother Daughter weekends, Y-Guide programs, and week-long Senior Adult Camps. The program includes traditional summer camp for boys and girls who are rising 2nd–10th graders and an adventure camp for boys and girls who are rising 4th–10th graders.
