About
Arts Immersion Summer Camps offers week-long, multi-disciplinary arts immersion that includes visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, movement activities, and music activities. Campers take part in activities such as garment alterations, visible mending, block carving and printing, dyeing, customizing clothing, theater, acting and performance exercises, improvisation, character development, scene study, group improv games, solo playwriting workshops, and puppetry, including designing, building, and performing socially conscious puppet creations. All art supplies are provided for the general camps, with specific supply lists for the clothing customization camp.
• Ages: 6–15 years old
• Schedule: Week-long camps, Monday–Friday, 9am–3pm, with one four-day week and full-day camps for the remaining weeks
• Price: $240–$300 per week (financial assistance available)
Week 7, Customize Your Clothes with Shaerie Mead, focuses on creatively customizing clothing through garment alterations, visible mending, block carving and printing, and dyeing to re-purpose and re-use existing clothes; supplies provided include clothes to experiment on, sewing tools and supplies, scrap fabric, blocks, carving tools and ink, professional fabric dye, and use of classroom machines, and participants are asked to bring approved clothing from home, personal sewing supplies, and note-taking supplies, and to wear clothing that can get ink or dye on it along with close-toed shoes. Week 8, Theater Camp with Evan Mitchell, focuses on skills to improve acting and performance abilities through improvisation, character development, scene study, group improv games, and solo playwriting workshops, and all supplies are provided and all skill levels are welcome. Week 9, Puppetry Camp with Sol Ramirez, focuses on creative expression through puppetry, including the social and cultural history of puppetry and its roots in activism and protest, and campers design, build, and perform socially conscious puppet creations.
Arts Immersion Summer Camps is offered by the Orange County Arts Commission, whose mission is to promote and strengthen the artistic and cultural development of Orange County, North Carolina. The Orange County Arts Commission is the non-partisan countywide arts agency that provides funding and support for arts programs, awards state Grassroots Arts Program funds in Orange County as the Designated County Partner, awards county-funded arts grants, sponsors programs, serves as an arts information clearinghouse, and runs a community arts space, the Eno Arts Mill. The Commission was created on February 4, 1985 by resolution of the Board of County Commissioners, and in 2021 the Orange County Arts Alliance, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was created to fundraise for the Commission and the arts community. The leadership team includes Katie Murray, Director; Maris Whitley, Grants and Operations Coordinator; and Courtney Powers, Programs Coordinator, and the organization is one of very few Local Arts Agencies housed within county government in North Carolina.
Camp staff and partners include musician and teaching artist Audrey Smith, who has over a decade of experience working with young musicians in schools and community music spaces; visual artist Meredith Haggerty, who works with collage, storytelling, performance, and participatory collage in her teaching and studio practices; Sol Ramirez 1,2,3 Puppetry, a youth and young adult led puppet company based in Chapel Hill that has been performing puppet spectacles since 2017 and was started by Sol Ramirez around 2010; Evan Mitchell, who trained as an actor and director at UNC Chapel Hill, has been teaching in North Carolina since 2012 in schools, universities, and theatre companies, served as Theatre Arts Director at the North Carolina Governor’s School West for eight summers, and began teaching full-time at Cedar Ridge in 2017; Amy McLean, who holds a BFA and MFA in Creative Writing, has been a reading and writing teacher, and worked for years at the public library; Jill Moffett, a teaching artist and writer with a PhD in Gender Studies and a Masters in Public Health; and Ruth Ward, who started dancing at age 5 at The Ballet School in Chapel Hill and was a member of The North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble for 9 years, performing nationally and internationally at schools, festivals, and other community venues.
