The Aquarium’s stated mission is “inspiring appreciation and conservation of our aquatic environments.” The Aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and received the AZA Quarter Century Award in 2015 for maintaining accreditation continuously for 25 years or more. The Aquarium’s history includes its original founding in 1976 as the North Carolina Marine Resources Center, a renaming to North Carolina Aquariums in 1986, a reopening after expansion in 2000, further renovation in 2016, and the construction of the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center in 2014, with a 50-year celebration in 2026.

EcoEdventures connected to the North Carolina Aquarium Society include an immersive Brazil 2026 experience for educators from throughout the United States, where formal and informal educators earn continuing education credits and learn about conservation initiatives for giant otters alongside two North Carolina Aquariums environmental educators.
