radKIDS Personal Empowerment Safety Education
radKIDS, Inc., 1710 Falls Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27609
About
radKIDS Personal Empowerment Safety Education uses a fun, activity and skill-based methodology to teach children personal empowerment safety skills. The radKIDS lifeskills curriculum focuses on personal boundaries, critical thinking skills, and physical resistance skills so children can recognize, avoid, resist, and, if necessary, escape violence or harm, including the dangers of opioid and drug abuse. The program teaches children how to “STOP” abduction if they are challenged or tricked by a predator, how to “STOP a bully!” through physical resistance to violence, and how to win by “escape and share” to protect themselves as well as their friends.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
• Schedule: National Certification & Licensing for new instructors is offered in multi-day, full-day formats.
• Price: $625 for the Boonville, MO National Certification & Licensing event; $625 for the Chicopee, MA National Certification & Licensing event.
Since 2001, radKIDS 501c3 has been described as the National Leader in Children’s Safety Education and as the National Leader in Children’s Safety & Development. Its Personal Empowerment Safety Education curriculum is described as the hands-on leader in children’s safety education in the prevention of abduction and as quickly becoming the most effective bullying prevention program available for schools today. The curriculum is the only skill-based developmental curriculum in the nation reported to meet both educational standards and requirements in Elementary Physical Education and Health, and it has become the foundational standard for a “Zero Victimization School” climate and culture.
The radKIDS mission states that the curriculum replaces fear with knowledge, skill, and power, and that it enhances a child’s self-value, resilience, and physical resistance skills. In the curriculum, children develop and establish their own personal boundaries, identify escape routes and safe zones, and are encouraged to tell someone in their safe zone and keep telling until somebody helps them. radKIDS does not teach “Stranger Danger,” but instead teaches children to trust their feelings, create and maintain their boundaries, and recognize and respond to unsafe and dangerous behavior of others. radKIDS children are described as gifted with the ability and skill to recognize, avoid, resist, or physically resist if necessary to escape violence or harm and tell until someone helps them.
The radKIDS Youth Personal Empowerment Safety Education Program evaluation was published in the Journal of Child + Adolescent Trauma (springer.com). The organization reports that radKIDS has helped save thousands of children’s lives to date. The curriculum clearly defines “reasonable self-defense” standards and context within a school, community, or neighborhood.
radKIDS comes to communities providing holistic and skill-based child safety instructor certification and welcomes parents, educators, counselors, law enforcement professionals, and children safety advocates to trainings. The Boonville, MO National Certification & Licensing event is hosted by the Boonville Police Department, and the Chicopee, MA National Certification & Licensing event is hosted by the Chicopee Police Department. There is also a Safe Start Team Class for professional development for current radKIDS instructors if a team has at least four radKIDS instructors who would like to achieve this certification.
One radKIDS attendee described the program’s importance by saying to their teacher, “You know this stuff is important, I am with myself 24 hours a day!”
