About
Classical Conversations offers a Christian homeschool program that includes specific activities such as National Memory Master, Foundations, Scribblers, Essentials, Faces of History, Challenge, Science Fair, Mock Trial, Debate, Protocol, Poetry Cafe, and Senior Thesis. The program uses a curriculum rooted in the classical model and includes trained parent-tutors who model the classical approach. It is a Christ-centered and family-friendly home education program created by parents for parents and covers K-4 to college credit, with college degree opportunities for parents.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5:00 pm
Classical Conversations states that its mission is “to know God and to make Him known.” The program connects families with a local homeschool community group and states that community is at its core, with families learning together. It describes itself as a proven Christian homeschool program that offers a comprehensive Christian education and a local community of like-minded families who learn together and do life together.
The leadership team includes Leigh Bortins as Founder and Robert Bortins, Jr. as CEO. Classical Conversations traces its history to 1997, beginning with eleven students and parents, or 11 teenage boys, meeting in the basement of Leigh Bortins’ North Carolina home, and now reports serving over 45,000 families and filling over 125,000 student seats in programs spread over 50 countries globally.
Parent and student testimonials describe experiences with National Memory Master (NMM) as “10/10,” “God-filled,” and “more than just memorizing and money,” and refer to it as a “final celebration of the memory work of Foundations and Essentials” and a “welcoming shift into the Challenge years.” One 2025 NMM Champion describes the competition as filled with “laughter, celebration, and meaningful friendships,” and a 2025 NMM parent calls their family’s experience “a very special once in a lifetime moment.” Additional testimonials about the Classical Learning Center (CLC) describe it as having a “transformative influence” on marriage, family, and community relationships, “the best thing” some parents have done to take their skills as classical educators to the next level, and “the single largest positive impact” on growth as a classical educator, including how parents prepare lessons, assess students, and lead in their communities.
