Owner Erik Powell started ATA Martial Arts in 1995 and received his black belt in 1998. The program states that martial arts training at this school emphasizes personal development and life skills like confidence, discipline, and focus, and that it offers children a strong foundation in character qualities such as courtesy, respect, and discipline. The mission statement says, “Your best SELF-DEFENSE is your CONFIDENCE!!” and “We Help Parents Raise Confident Leaders & Adults Reach Their Full Potential!” The program invites families to take advantage of web specials and to join as they “empower ourselves and our community with martial arts.”

Parents and students from Bismarck describe their experiences in several testimonials. One parent, David Leingang, says his daughter gets excited for each class, enjoys the programming, and is taught self-defense along with self-control, confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills. Another parent, Troy Walker, says his children “learn far more than taekwondo and self-defense, including integrity, discipline, self-esteem, focus, confidence, persistence, goals, attitude, respect, and much more.” Other reviewers describe the school as a professional environment with an “amazing experience day in and day out,” praise Mr. Powell’s energy and enthusiasm, and note that the program is organized and structured with fun nights once a month and camps during the summer. One student, Jena Zuther, states that time spent at Bismarck ATA Martial Arts shaped her into a person who is confident and physically and mentally strong.
