Gold Star Tutoring

Gold Star Tutoring offers one-on-one tutoring in reading, math, Washington State History, and a wide range of math subjects including decimals and fractions, basic arithmetic, graphing and graph making, geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics, pre-calculus, algebra, business mathematics, finance, and calculus. The program also provides dyslexia tutoring, home school tutoring, alternative schooling support, and subject-specific support such as AP Calculus tutoring. Students can attend in-person sessions or choose online Zoom tutoring, including SAT tutoring, SAT prep, ACT prep, AP test prep, and ALEKS Placement Exam preparation.

Gold Star Tutoring was founded in 2009 with a stated passion for serving students who might otherwise be overlooked in a traditional classroom setting and is staffed by a team of certified teachers. The program specializes in teaching students to read, write, and spell through a customized, Orton-Gillingham-based approach that uses a unique, multisensory method involving sight, sound, touch, and movement, with each lesson tailored to the student’s learning style and pacing. Gold Star Tutoring has developed its own language program with 5 levels of phonetic advancement, and this system has been used with hundreds of struggling readers with varying levels of language delays. The first step in the program is learning about the student who is seeking help, and tutors work alongside parents, guardians, and schools while welcoming students of all backgrounds.

Gold Star Tutoring offers a NEW Orton-Gillingham-based workbook that is described as a full science-based workbook to bring the learning home, with accompanying lesson plans from the same teacher’s guide used with students and a tapping hands graphic that can be printed and used for each lesson. The program states that it has helped hundreds of students build confidence, address literacy challenges, and reach lasting academic success, and it provides a quiet, safe environment where students do not have to worry about somebody making fun of them. Gold Star Tutoring is familiar with SAT and ACT prep and the ALEKS Placement Exam and notes that online tutoring via Zoom is available no matter where students are in the world. The program reports proudly serving families in La Center, Vancouver, Ridgefield, Woodland, Salmon Creek, Battleground, Camas, Washougal, and East Vancouver. One new client shared, “I know how to read, I know the sounds, but I don’t know how to explain it and make it fun for my child.”
