About
Just Kids offers homework and individual activities during quiet time, free choice of activity centers, and both small and large group games and activities. Children take part in arts and crafts, science activities, music activities, and special projects and themes such as anti-bullying. The program also includes indoor and outdoor play with both competitive and non-competitive games, as well as community service projects and parent involvement projects, and serves a light breakfast and healthy snack.
• Ages: 5–12 years old
The Just Kids curriculum includes science, cooking, music, anti-bullying, safety, community service, and parent participation opportunities. The mission of Just Kids is to collaborate with 16 school districts hosting the program to provide school-based childcare to children in kindergarten through 6th grade, focusing on child safety along with a relationship-building and child-enrichment curriculum. Families have used Just Kids for over 39 years, and Archway Programs has provided Just Kids in 26 schools in Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties for over 38 years.
Just Kids is offered by Archway Programs and is supported by a leadership team that includes a program director, district managers, an administrator, and staff handling subsidy services. The program is staffed by more than 160 mature and experienced childcare staff, with a consistent staff-to-child ratio below 1:15. Each staff member receives over 40 hours of professional development focused on child development, learning through play, medication administration, and diversity, along with extensive summer training and routine monthly training. Average length of service is 8 years for supervisors, 3 years for childcare assistants, and 13 years for support and managerial staff, and childcare staff focus on supervising children rather than handling enrollment or payment.
Just Kids uses monthly individualized curriculum calendars, activity centers for student choice, and a soft space for comfort and individual quiet activities. Staff and children together make choices and plan program activities, and enrichment includes community service and parent involvement projects. Safety and monitoring practices are stated to be above all New Jersey State Licensing Requirements, with procedures that include notification to the County Office of Emergency Management, monthly Code Blue drills for strangers in the building or playground, medical emergency drills three times per year, and written policies and procedures for emergency preparedness, evacuation, and lockdown. The program follows thorough medication administration practices and uses an internal monitoring system to check monthly compliance with licensure standards and Just Kids standards.
Breakfast and afternoon snack at CACFP participating schools meet federal regulations. Just Kids serves 16 school districts in South Jersey, where individual school districts and Archway Programs work together to provide center-based school-age care. The program offers online registration forms and electronic payment options by debit card, credit card, or bank account on a monthly basis, and extra services are billed to parents rather than paid for in advance. A yearly registration fee does not need to be repaid if a child re-enrolls within the same school year. Childcare assistance is available through the Just Kids Child Care Subsidy Program at select locations, and Just Kids states that it embraces differences among staff and children.
