About

EcoVentures Surf Lessons offers beginner, novice, and intermediate surfing lessons, with options for private surf lessons, group surf lessons, and custom surf programs for groups. All lessons take place in a small group setting, and group lessons use a 3:1 participant-to-instructor ratio or less. Each surf lesson includes a soft foam surfboard, leash, and wax, and participants are asked to bring water, a towel, and be water ready at least 5 minutes before the start time.

• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Surf lessons are 1-hour sessions offered by appointment on Monday–Friday mornings, with in-season lessons available Monday through Saturday from mid-May through August, using two daily time slots at 7:45am and 8:55am and no lessons after 10am.
• Price: Group Setting (3:1 ratio or less): $75 per person for a 1-hour lesson. Private Lessons: $125 for a 1-hour lesson, with additional surfers at $105 each; pricing is per person and includes all equipment.

All surf lesson participants must know how to swim, be comfortable in the water, and be able to paddle back out on their own, and the minimum age for all surf lessons is 8 years old with no exceptions. Parents are not required to stay for the lesson but are welcome to do so. Lessons take place in the mornings so participants do not need beach tags, and the program has a strict cancellation policy with no exceptions, with instructors relying on tips as part of their income.

Surf instructors are CPR and First Aid Certified, and multiple CPR certified instructors are present at every lesson. EcoVentures Surf Lessons is led by founder David W. Matagiese, who works with each guest. The surf school is described as award winning, is run in conjunction with its sister company Southend Surf Shop, and is the only licensed and insured surf instruction in Cape May. EcoVentures states that its mission is rooted in getting people outside and actively enjoying the outdoors, teaching youth through logical thinking, resilience, grit through failure, success through hard work, and a foundation of education and conservation, while aiming to teach something new each day through out-of-the-ordinary activities.
