The Recreation Commission sponsors a major portion of Closter's recreational activities. The Recreation Commission is led by Recreation Commission Director Jim Oettinger. The Recreation Commission came into being shortly after World War II. Funds for operation are provided by the municipal budget and registration fees that are collected for each activity. The Director, his assistants and summer staff are part-time salaried employees of the Borough, and all other Commission members and coaches are volunteers. Staff members have Rutgers Courses Concussion Training. Registration for all Closter Recreation programs takes place via CommunityPass. Registration for Full Day Summer Rec Camp is closed because maximum capacity has been reached, and the application for full-day and half-day summer camp counselors is open. The program has a Parents' Code of Conduct (PAYS Parents’ Code of Ethics). Closter Recreation has a refund policy that includes a full refund before teams are picked or assembled, no refunds once teams are selected, prorated refunds after the season starts due to injury plus cost of jersey, and a no refund policy after the first session for non-Closter Recreation run programs such as TGA programs, outside clinics, and tennis. The mission of the Recreation Commission and Closter Coaches Association is to provide an outlet for children to participate in and enjoy a well-rounded sports program, regardless of skill level, and to have children learn lessons about winning with grace, losing with dignity, persevering during tough times, embracing winning, battling back from defeat, never giving up, and striving to be a better athlete and a better person through participation in Closter's Recreation Programs.
