In 1960, Albert and Clare Appel transitioned their 176-acre farm and its 20,000 chickens into Appel Farm Arts Camp, which was founded by professional musicians and music educators. Appel Farm Arts & Music Center was incorporated in 1978 as a non-profit, charitable and educational organization with tax-exempt status, a professional staff, and a volunteer Board of Directors. Over the past 60 years, Appel Farm has delivered arts and learning experiences and has evolved into a multidisciplinary regional arts center that serves more than 32,000 children and adults annually through arts education, arts appreciation, and creative expression. Appel Farm is dedicated to providing all visitors, including those who need accessible services, with a friendly, caring environment in which to enjoy the arts.
Appel Farm Arts Camp is a gender inclusive arts camp and describes its community as neurodiverse. The camp describes itself as a safe, gender inclusive, neurodiverse community centered on personal growth and fun, and it has piloted gender inclusive bunks and gender neutral bathrooms while reexamining how it collects information such as sex or gender. Appel Farm identifies itself as a leader and at the forefront of social justice advocacy.
Appel Farm states that it strives to co-create experiences that inspire people to unleash their inherent creativity, leading to self-discovery, personal growth, community building, and joy. Appel Farm has delivered transformative arts and learning experiences as the arts education leader in South Jersey, serving audiences, artists, and students through programs on its campus, in local schools, and in the community. One camp parent and former camper, Katerina, says, “Appel Farm has this unique space of no judgment, joyful creation and true empowerment that I have not found in many other places.”
