About
Garfield YMCA Youth Programs take place at the Garfield YMCA’s main branch and use spaces that include the Aquatics Center, pool, pantry, and Produce Box Pop Ups. The programs operate under the YMCA’s stated mission: “Strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.”
The Garfield YMCA has been serving the community for over 95 years. Its service area includes Garfield, Saddle Brook, Elmwood Park, Lodi, Wallington, Fairlawn, Passaic, and Clifton. The organization holds PraesidiumAccreditation by Praesidium, which is described as a prestigious honor that publicly demonstrates the organization has worked to achieve the highest standards in abuse prevention, and this accreditation is in place for three years. As part of this process, the Garfield YMCA implemented Praesidium’s Accreditation Standards in eight operational areas: policies, screening and selection, training, monitoring and supervision, consumer participation, internal feedback systems, responding, and administrative practices. The YMCA states that Praesidium Accreditation provides solid proof of sound risk management practices and maintains a “Zero Tolerance” policy for child abuse and/or substance abuse. The pantry is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30–11:30, with the exception of produce days, and Produce Box Pop Ups are held on the 2nd and 3rd Thursday of the month. Patricia Gallagher is the CEO of the Garfield YMCA and has stated, “We are pleased to send the message that we will not compromise the safety of those in our care—for any reason,” and, “As an organization, we are dedicated and committed to proactively keeping those in our care safe from sexual abuse.”
