Urban Arts at Monroe was founded in 2006 by artists and co-owners Justine Uva and Patricia Morale. Urban Arts has been providing enrichment classes to schools since 2017. The mission of Urban Arts at Monroe states that it offers art classes for children and adults and is committed to providing a creative and nurturing environment where students use the visual arts as a vehicle for self-expression and discovery, and that it honors the creative potential in all students. The program notes that older students have amassed a strong body of work to be used in portfolios for high school and college applications. The studio provides the space for people of all ages to create in an environment with great light, great energy and lots of love, and classes are held in a spacious, well ventilated studio where students sit at their own tables.

Co-owner Justine Uva attained her teaching certificate from New Jersey City University, and co-owner Patricia Morale attained her MFA at Pratt Institute. Urban Arts curates student art shows throughout the year, and student art shows are part of the program’s activities. During the celebration of Hoboken’s 150th Anniversary, Justine Uva collaborated with Geri Fallo, Stephanie Ashby, and local students to create a mural on Frank Sinatra Drive. Urban Arts has provided enrichment classes to schools, and Patricia Morale has coordinated community projects such as obtaining state funding from the Safe & Clean Neighborhood Act to redesign and refurbish local playgrounds, creating murals for the children’s ward at the Jersey City Medical Center, designing costumes and sets for a theater company, curating art exhibitions, and volunteering art therapy at a mental health facility.

Parent feedback about Urban Arts at Monroe includes comments that Patty and Justine teach toddlers to adults with equal passion and enthusiasm, and that they have the capacity to tap into a student's greatest potential. One parent shared that their daughter said if her whole school was like Urban Arts, life would be perfect. Another parent stated that Urban Arts was a positive influence that allowed their daughter to experience and express her love for the arts and that they feel lucky to have the program in their community. A parent also thanked the program for sending a video of the children's art, organizing an outside show, and for what they described as a positive, safe, and sensible approach to having classes during the pandemic.
