A Sound Start Early Childhood Music School offers music and movement classes that include rocking, bouncing, dancing, creative movement, vocal play, singing, imitating sounds, and identifying beats. Children explore different textures, sounds, and instruments, learn about and play different instruments, and hear different genres of music from around the world. Classes may also include storytime, puppets, props, visuals, stories, a live guitar jam, and a Spanish music class called “Canta Conmigo,” where children learn basics of the Spanish language and everyday routines through songs and related activities.

A Sound Start Early Childhood Music School is an early childhood music school with mixed-age classes for ages 0–4 years old, where family members such as mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and nanny join in the activities. The program offers UNIQUE Music & Movement classes with curriculum units that use music as the medium while including activities such as rocking, bouncing, dancing, and other developmentally appropriate musical experiences. The curriculum is tailored so that each child has a unique experience every single time, and the programs are created to evolve as children develop and gain new skills and interaction with peers.

A Sound Start Early Childhood Music School opened its doors in 2006 in Jersey City. Claudia Orci joined the team in 2011, created the Canta Conmigo Spanish music class in 2011, and became owner/director in 2017. The program has partnerships and collaborations with organizations such as Nimbus Dance, WonderWorkz, Lily Pad Academy, Narra Collective, Fast-Track Languages, and Twin Monkey Play.

Owner and head of A Sound Start Early Childhood Music School, Claudia Orci, graduated with a BA in Business Administration/Marketing, became a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, earned a Positive Education Certification by The Flourishing Center, studied guitar since childhood, and is a member of The Masterwork Chorus in Chatham, NJ. Teacher and performer Sofia Oro is studying Music Education at Montclair State University with a concentration in Jazz Voice, has been active in the community performing in festivals and playing original music, and has taught in summer camps and private lessons. Multi-instrumentalist and educator Harry Horowitz studied Trumpet and Music Education at New Jersey City University and has experience providing independent and group music instruction to learners of all ages. Music educator and performer Julia Haviland studied flute performance and music education at New Jersey City University, graduated magna cum laude in 2020, has been teaching and creating curricula for early childhood music since 2020, directed the early childhood music program for Newark Public Schools’s south ward, and has taught for the Maplewood Outside School and the South Bergen Jointure Commission.

The mission of A Sound Start Early Childhood Music School states that it lays the foundations of a long life love for music and adds the joy of community music-making, with each class described as a world of discovery and adventure that sparks joy and enables children to connect with their inner musician. The mission also states that A Sound Start is the place where a “Little Musician” can begin a music journey, with programs created to evolve as a child develops and grows, and that the owner creates joyful, engaging spaces where music becomes a tool for connection, growth, and fun.
