A Sound Start offers music and music & movement classes that include rocking, bouncing, dancing, creative movement, vocal play, singing, imitating sounds, and a live guitar jam. Children explore different textures, sounds, and instruments, use visuals, identify beats, learn about different instruments, play instruments, and join in storytime. The program also offers Birthday Parties and gift cards, as well as a Spanish music class called Canta Conmigo, where children learn Spanish basics and everyday routines through songs, puppets, props, instruments, stories, visuals, and live guitar.

A Sound Start is described as an Early Childhood Music School with UNIQUE Music & Movement classes, including a mixed-age class called “A Sound Start Tots” for ages 0–4 years old with a caregiver. Each curriculum unit uses music as the medium to nurture language skills, social interactions, fine and gross motor skills, creativity, and reasoning, and programs are created to evolve as the child develops and grows. The curriculum of the class is tailored so that each child has a unique experience every single time, and family members including mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and nanny join in the class. The mission of A Sound Start is to lay the foundations of a long life love for music, add the joy of community music-making, spark joy, enable children to connect with their inner musician, and offer a place where a “Little Musician” can begin a music journey within a nurturing environment full of energy, imagination, music, dancing, and playful delight.
A Sound Start, Early Childhood Music School, opened its doors in 2006 in Jersey City, when it was opened by Andi Gunden. Claudia Orci joined the team in 2011, created the Canta Conmigo Spanish music class that same year, and became owner/director of A Sound Start in 2017. The program offers a Summer Session in addition to its regular classes.
Owner and head of A Sound Start, Claudia Orci, graduated college with a BA in Business Administration/Marketing, became a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, and earned a Positive Education Certification by The Flourishing Center. Staff members include Sofia Oro, who is studying Music Education at Montclair State University with a concentration in Jazz Voice; Harry Horowitz, who studied Trumpet and Music Education at New Jersey City University; and Julia Haviland, who studied flute performance and music education at New Jersey City University, graduating magna cum laude in 2020.
A Sound Start has partnerships and collaborations that bring its curriculum into different community spaces, including camps and schools, and that share music with New Jersey families while contributing to building a community with a strong sense of music and arts. These include a partnership with Nimbus Dance since 2017, a partnership with WonderWorkz bringing A Sound Start to their camps since 2021, a partnership with Lily Pad Academy in 2024 to be part of the music team for enrolled kids and to offer extracurricular A Sound Start music time classes for the community, a collaboration with Narra Collective in 2024 adding A Sound Start curriculum as an exclusive offer to Narra members and the Jersey City community, a partnership with Fast-Track Languages starting in 2025 to bring the Canta Conmigo bilingual class to their bilingual school, and a partnership with Twin Monkey Play in Lyndhurst bringing the Canta Conmigo bilingual curriculum to their space.
Parents and caregivers have shared that they enjoyed the music, props, story, and welcoming teachers, and that children were engaged and entertained throughout the classes. Testimonials describe Ms. Claudia as engaging, welcoming, and in tune with both developmental stages and emotional connections, and note that families plan to return on a regular basis.
