About
Bodega Jiu-Jitsu Kids Grappling Program introduces children to structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. The program is part of a No-Gi only academy that also offers Kids Jiu-Jitsu and Adult Grappling. Classes take place in a safe, disciplined, and supportive environment for kids.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
Bodega Jiu-Jitsu was founded in late 2022 by lifelong martial artists Kyvann Gonzalez and Chas Makk. Coach Chas is the first Bodega Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Kyvann Gonzalez and trained under Jay Hayes of NJ United for the first 7 years of his grappling journey, then spent 3 years at Essential with JT Torres, and received his brown belt from Kyvann in 2023. Kyvann is a black belt under Andy and Mike Main, who are under Jamie Cruz and Renzo Gracie. The founders believe martial arts are more than just a sport and see it as a powerful tool for unlocking human potential and fostering personal growth. The academy serves the surrounding communities of South Orange, Millburn, and Montclair.
The kids program offers structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, disciplined, and supportive environment where no prior experience is needed. Environments are built to meet each participant where they are, with beginner “Genesis” classes available so students can learn without feeling overwhelmed. Every class is designed with safety in mind, and scenarios are scaled to match each student’s level, using live, adaptive settings from the very first week.
Kids in this program learn how to move their bodies, control their emotions, and stand up for themselves without aggression. They experience an energetic, full-body training system that builds strength, stamina, coordination, and agility. Training in this setting increases cardiovascular health, improves flexibility, and sharpens balance. Children also learn to stay attentive, follow instruction, and manage their energy in a structured setting.
Guided, real-world scenarios in class give kids practice assessing situations calmly and responding with control. Purposeful partner work and group engagement are used so children can learn how to connect with others respectfully and effectively. The program takes place in an inclusive, community-first environment, and every session encourages kids to face obstacles, build resilience, and rise to the occasion.
