The Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic states that its mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Professional staff and community partners deliver a comprehensive array of educational, social, and recreational programs, including a Teen Center focused on high school graduation and post-secondary education and career success, and a Health & Wellness program with age-appropriate modules for ages 6–8, 9–12, and teens that teach nutrition and healthy living. Character and leadership programs focus on helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and participate in the democratic process, and diversity is celebrated with equity forming the foundation of efforts, including community perspective and children’s and parents’ voices.
The organization reports that it currently serves more than 1,400 children and teens per day across two Clubhouses and eleven satellite locations, and that a nutritious snack and meal are served each day to Club Kids. It provides swim lessons and certifies training through the Red Cross, and its swim team gives over 50 kids the chance to compete in USA Swimming sponsored meets. As of March 2020, the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic served as an Emergency Food Distribution Center for 12 weeks, then ran a full-day Summer Camp from July through August, and during the 2020–2021 school year provided full-day educational support while public school districts operated a virtual education model, addressing food insecurity and social-emotional support.
According to its history, business leaders associated with the Jay Cee’s incorporated the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson in 1963, and an abandoned fire house served as the first Boys Club in 1964. After a $1,000,000 capital campaign, the Club moved in 1967 to a 38,000 square foot building featuring an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, games room, and classrooms on three floors. In 1988, the Club paid its mortgage and completed a $500,000 renovation, and in 1991 it officially changed its name to the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson. A strategic plan called “5,000 in Five” was announced in 1997 and, by 2001, the organization reports that these goals were exceeded. In 2003, the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson merged with the Boys & Girls Club of Passaic, and the organization states it has been a pillar of the communities for over 60 years.
