Mainland United Soccer Association Recreation and Travel Programs include recreational soccer, travel soccer, the First Kick (U4–U6) training program, the Kick Start (U7–U10) training program, juggling with a soccer ball, and futsal. The Recreation Soccer League is an in-town league where all games are played against other MUSA recreation teams of the same age, and score is not kept. The Recreation Soccer League sponsored by Mainland United Soccer Association is for boys and girls 3–11 years of age, with age groups from U4 (under 4, born in 2022) through U12 (under 12, born in 2014), and no tryouts are required to join a recreation team. Travel soccer age groups run from U8 (under 8) through U18 (under 18), with U8–U10 travel teams playing 7v7, U11–U12 playing 9v9, and U13–U18 playing 11v11. Travel soccer is competitive soccer played against teams from other towns or communities and is for players and parents who are willing to make a higher level of commitment in time, effort, training, and competition.
For recreation soccer, all practice/game sessions are held outdoors on Saturday mornings in an 8-week practice/game schedule, and both games and training sessions take place on Saturday mornings, weather and field conditions permitting. Registration for the Recreation Soccer League typically opens seven weekends before the first scheduled practice/game day, with regular online registration open for about 40 days, late online registration for about 8 days, and walk-on registration on opening day at the first scheduled game. Parents must provide soccer shoes, shin guards, shorts, and a water bottle for each session, and late recreation registrants may experience a delay in receiving their team uniform t-shirt.
The U8–U12 travel program consists of up to 16 fall practices, 10 fall league games, a fall tournament likely on Labor Day weekend, up to 16 spring practices, and spring league games. The U13–U14 travel program also consists of up to 16 fall practices, 10 fall league games, a fall tournament likely on Labor Day weekend, up to 16 spring practices, and spring league games. The U15–U18 travel program consists of up to 4 November outdoor practices, a fall tournament likely on Thanksgiving weekend, winter futsal, up to 24 spring outdoor practices, and spring league play.
The club offers professional training by certified staff. In the U8–U12 travel program, teams are coached by parent coaches with a professional trainer at practices. In the U13–U14 travel program, teams are coached by parent coaches with coordinated training from Mainland High School coaches and a professional trainer at practices. In the U15–U18 travel program, all outdoor activities are coached by a professional coach or trainer.
Mainland United Soccer Association is a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enhancing the culture of soccer in the Mainland area. Its philosophy is to provide a positive environment for the development and enjoyment of soccer for area youth to have fun and learn soccer fundamentals in a non-threatening environment. The goal of the Recreation Soccer League is to give each player the opportunity to develop a solid foundation of soccer skills while playing in a fun environment. The Foundations: Player Development Guide consists of skills training curriculums aimed at exposing younger players to the sport and developing soccer-related skills and foot/ball control in a non-competitive fun environment.
Participants from Somers Point, Northfield, and Linwood are welcome, and Mainland United Soccer Association is an open club accepting players from Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean Counties. Registration schedule notices are broadcast via email, school backpack distribution, and the organization’s website page. Scholarship opportunities are considered, and applications may be made during registration or by contacting a board member, and volunteer work in trade is welcomed if possible. Mainland United Soccer Association has a strict no-refund policy; if a child cannot play after registering, registration can be moved to a future season, and donations are not refundable.
