About

The Hollydell Learn to Skate Program offers Learn to Skate classes with specific options for tots, youth, adults, hockey players, and skaters interested in freestyle. Class levels include Snowplow 1–4, Basic 1–6, Pre-Freeskate, Adult classes, Freestyle classes, and a Hockey skating skills class. Registration includes skates if needed, six weeks of instruction from professional coaching staff, and six public skating passes to be used during the series.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Learn to Skate classes generally run in a series of 6 weeks, with a 6-week Spring Series and a 7-week Summer Series offered on Wednesdays
• Price: 6 week Spring Series $165; 7 week Summer Series $192.50

The current Spring 2 Learn to Skate Series is a 6-week Wednesday series on 5/27, 6/3, 6/10, 6/17, 6/24, and 7/1, followed by a 7-week Summer Learn to Skate Series on Wednesdays 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, 8/12, 8/19, and 8/26. Snowplow 1 skills classes meet on Wednesdays from 5:30–6:00pm or 12:50–1:20pm, Snowplow 2 on Wednesdays from 6:05–6:35pm or 1:25–1:55pm, Snowplow 3 on Wednesdays from 5:30–6:00pm, Snowplow 4 on Wednesdays from 6:05–6:35pm, Basic 1 on Wednesdays from 6:05–6:35pm or 1:25–1:55pm, and Basic 2 on Wednesdays from 5:30–6:00pm or at 1:25pm. Class size is limited, registration closes when it meets the maximum number, and participants must register in advance.

Toddlers in the program need to be over 3 years old, potty trained, and able to understand and follow directions, and all tot beginners start with Snowplow 1 for ages 3–6 years old. All youth beginners start with Basic 1 for older 6 year olds through teens, and older teens and adults start with Adult Beginner. Snowplow 1 is a group class and is not one-to-one instruction, and the program does its best to keep about a 5:1 ratio for Snowplow 1 classes and an 8:1 ratio for Basic 1 classes, with Snowplow 1 and Basic 1 sometimes closing because of the lower student-to-teacher ratio.

The program administers Learn to Skate USA, which is described as a progressive curriculum that builds on the previous level and is the only program endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey, and U.S. Speedskating. Future figure skaters who complete Snowplow 4 move to Basic 2, and after completing Basic 6, skaters can register for Pre-Freeskate. Future hockey players who complete Snowplow 4 can enroll in the Hockey skating skills class and/or the learn to play program on Sundays, and the Hockey skating skills class is open to future and current players who have completed Snowplow 4 or Basic 2; sticks are not needed for this class.

Adult classes are for older teens and adults who want to learn and improve skating skills, and Freestyle classes are for skaters who have gone through Basic 1–6 and Pre-Freeskate and want to continue with figure skating skills including jumps, spins, and moves in the field skills. The program states that it offers 20 levels of classes throughout the year and that classes are organized by age-specific levels to teach the “fun”damentals of skating. The mission statement for the program is “START A LIFELONG PASSION OF SKATING,” and it notes that Learn to Skate USA is a progressive curriculum that develops all skaters.

Leadership for the program includes Amy Griffith, who is listed as the contact for questions at [email protected].
