About
Education and Group Programs at The Bugseum of New Jersey include live presentations and touch presentations with insects, as well as an interactive show with live insects. Participants can touch a live tarantula, millipede, and hissing cockroach, play bug games on touch-screen computers, crawl through a termite mud tube, view thousands of exotic insects, and see over two dozen terrariums with live insects.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Summer weekday daytime hours with touch presentations in the afternoon, and fall weekend daytime hours
• Price: Admission $14 + tax per visitor; children ages 2 and under are free; tickets are purchased onsite
The program is part of a fun and unique insect learning center with over a dozen exhibit areas, creative displays set within the architecture of a bug-themed city, touch-screen computers, an observation hive, many live insects, and a bug-themed gift shop called the One-Stop Bug Shop. The stated mission is to motivate visitors to discover the little-known lives of insects and foster a greater appreciation for bugs and their place in the world.
Leadership for the center includes “Velvet Ant” Val (Valerie), who has retail sales and management experience and a background in art; “Dragonfly” Di (Diane), who is the Group Coordinator; and Chris Koerner, manager of Ozane Pest Control and originator of the idea of opening a bug museum.
Parents have described the museum as having interactive shows where guests can see and hold different bugs, including during show-and-tell style times. Reviews mention over two dozen terrariums with live insects, many insect display cases, and live bug shows with knowledgeable presentations and the option to touch live specimens with guidance. Multiple testimonials note that visits have included learning about insects, seeing them up close, and opportunities for both children and adults to participate in the presentations.
