Philmont Scout Ranch High Adventure and Training Center Programs are part of Scouting America, whose mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Philmont Scout Ranch began in 1938 as Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, with its first camping season in 1939, and more than 1 million Scouts, Venturers, and advisors have experienced Philmont since 1939. The Philmont staff are trained to meet each participant where they are to develop an appreciation for the importance of cultural, historical, and environmental resources. Philmont Scout Ranch is accredited and affiliated with the American Camp Association (ACA), and Gold Standard is Leave No Trace’s highest form of recognition. Philmont is described as the world’s largest youth camp, Scouting America’s premier training and High Adventure destination, and Scouting America’s largest National High-Adventure Base, and it is home to the National Scouting Museum, historic Villa Philmonté, and the Philmont Training Center. The program offers Fall and Winter Adventure programs, Family Adventure Camp for all ages, Unit Adventure Camp that gives Scouts a taste of high adventure without full backcountry commitment, Leadership Challenges including NAYLE and PLC, and Zia Adventures inclusive, adaptive programs. Philmont maintains a Philmont Photo Archive with thousands of photos and an option to order prints or digital downloads, and it presents a living history lesson with activities such as homesteading, mining, and early western settlement reenactments. Philmont reports conscientious attention to low-impact camping techniques and diligent wildlife and forestry conservation work, with a stated vision to expand experiences while ensuring minimal ecological impact on resources, and it states that it sets the standard for outdoor ethics education, with the principles of Leave No Trace and the Philmont Wilderness Pledge described as integral to preserving resources. Philmont Scout Ranch has launched a reforestation project seven years after the Ute Park Fire and has been awarded a $99,999 Trails+ Grant to revitalize a historic trail connecting Philmont to Old Town Cimarron.
