YMCA Camp Shaver Overnight Camp offers activities such as arts and crafts, climbing, cooking, drama, fishing, riflery, forestry, gardening, hiking, karate, water ecology, river play, and campfires with skits and songs. Campers can also take part in a high ropes course, ropes course elements, overnight campouts, hiking and backpacking, and community service projects. The program includes Adventure Camp, Traditional Camp, Senior Traditional Camp, and Leaders in Training (LIT), each with its own session structure and focus.
• Ages: 7–16 years old
• Schedule: One-week Adventure Camp, Traditional Camp, and Senior Traditional Camp sessions run Sunday to Friday; two-week Leaders in Training (LIT) sessions also run Sunday to Friday. Adventure Camp is a 4-day, 3-night hiking and backpacking journey; Traditional Camp sessions are one week; Senior Traditional Camp has one-week sessions and a special two-week session; LIT sessions are two weeks.

Since 1945, YMCA Camp Shaver has been providing fun and educational programs for youth from New Mexico and the Southwest and describes itself as a “home away from home” for campers. The camp states that it emphasizes the core values of responsibility, respect, caring, and honesty and that it provides a setting to develop self-esteem and personal character, learn teamwork, gain a sense of community, and develop an appreciation and respect for the environment. Adventure Camp is described as the ultimate wilderness experience for young explorers and is a 4-day, 3-night hiking and backpacking journey that takes campers deep into the Jemez wilderness. Traditional Camp is described as the classic camp experience with the fun and games associated with summer camp. Senior Traditional Camp cabin groups are split half and half male and female, with campers sleeping in separate cabins, and this program offers more age-appropriate challenges such as hikes, teambuilding, and overnight destinations, as well as an opportunity to learn about the Santa Fe National Forest through firsthand experience. The Leaders in Training (LIT) program focuses on individual leadership development, teambuilding, and self-discovery; during week one, participants learn leadership skills and take part in more challenging ropes course elements as a teambuilding experience, and during week two, they use these skills in community service projects and by planning and presenting one or more of the camp’s group activities or lessons.
The YMCA of Central New Mexico states that strengthening the Central New Mexico community is its cause and that it works side-by-side with neighbors to nurture the potential of kids, promote healthy living, and foster a sense of social responsibility. It reports that it gives back and provides support through social services, global services, volunteerism and giving, and advocacy, and that the Leaders in Training (LIT) program includes participation in community service projects.
