Mountain Kids! Outdoor Adventure Education is led by Katie Macaulay and the Mountain Kids! Team. The program is an outdoor education and adventure program for children in Santa Fe, New Mexico, offering hands-on educational adventures in nature for 5–16 year olds through summer camp and year-round programs. Mountain Kids! began in 2009 with a borrowed “Adventure Van,” meeting in a backyard and playing in the mountains three days per week during June, and twelve years later the community included hundreds of families from Santa Fe and beyond. Program statistics listed by Mountain Kids! include 16 years, 372 camps, 5,707 kids, and 88,146 miles hiked.
The stated mission of Mountain Kids! is to foster a sense of community and personal challenge, while instilling a love of nature and all that it provides, with a goal of creating a healthy new generation of young people who care about the earth and each other. The program describes core beliefs that emphasize nature connection, safe unstructured play, community, and caring for the earth, and it aims to unplug children and “Leave No Child Inside.” Mountain Kids! works with SFPS students from Title 1 schools and partners with Communities in Schools to reach underserved children, and its flagship summer camp reaches children of all backgrounds. In 2024, the program gave away $20,000 in summer camp scholarships, and it offers sliding scale pricing for Kids Adventure Days with no scholarship application required.
Parent and child testimonials describe kids enjoying hiking, circle time and playing in the morning, talking in the woods or on a trail, singing songs, hearing jokes, being with kids of varied ages, and archery. Parents report that their children come home happy, dirty, and tired, and some children have called it the best camp they have ever been to. One parent noted that their children enjoyed listening to chapter books on the ride to the trail and playing games that encouraged water drinking, and another mentioned that their children learned terms such as igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Multiple testimonials refer to Mountain Kids! as the best or “Best of Santa Fe” summer camp, and several parents mention that their children enjoy the counselors, meeting new friends while hiking, and the friendly atmosphere.
