Horses4Heroes – The Ranch Las Vegas is described as Horses4Heroes’ headquarters and flagship facility and is often described as a “YMCA with horses.” The facility includes 20 horses, five miniature horses, and a barnyard of farm animals including goats, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, a sheep, a llama, a miniature steer, and Jinx, The Rooster. The Ranch Las Vegas is described as providing a safe place for children, teens and adults and operates as a 2–25-acre ranch. The organization cares for donated, aged and retired horses, and donations support these horses, the barnyard animals, and free programs and workshops for those in the community who need a hand up, not a hand out. The Ranch’s fixed monthly expenses exceed $25,000, with donations accounting for 25% of the monthly revenue and the rest generated through programs. Summer Camps at the ranch are described as popular for ages 4 to 12, and high school and college students serve as camp counselors during eight, one-week camps. No School Day camps are offered throughout the year whenever kids are out of school, and in the summer of 2020, Summer Evenings at the Ranch were held every Saturday for seven weeks for local law enforcement families.
Horses4Heroes was founded in November 2006 by Sydney Knott and her family, who wanted to show support for officers and their families while they are alive. Horses4Heroes has been serving the community since 2006, and over the past 17 years, horses have made a difference in thousands of lives, with 2026 described as the 20th Anniversary of Horses4Heroes. The organization operates The Ranch Las Vegas in the aftermath of 9/11 and in response to a local tragedy involving LVMPD Sgt Henry Prendes. Horses4Heroes’ mission is to provide affordable outdoor recreational programs for children ages 2 to 17 whose parents are Active Duty service members, Veterans, First Responders and to offer mental health and wellness programs with horses to veterans and First Responders, recovering addicts, survivors of domestic abuse, violence, trauma and trafficking and at-risk youth and teens. The mission also includes serving local heroes and their families, including Active Duty service members, Veterans, Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Fighters/EMTs, teachers and healthcare workers, as well as those in the community who need a hand up, not a hand out, and offering affordable and life-changing experiences with horses for local heroes whose call of duty is to protect, serve, teach and heal and their families. Every hoofbeat at The Ranch Las Vegas is described as telling a story of empowerment, connection, community and western heritage.
Horses4Heroes serves local heroes and their families and those in the community who need a hand up, not a hand out, through programs such as camps, riding lessons, birthday parties and field trips that also generate revenue to support operations and fund free sessions for Veterans and First Responders with PTSD. Proceeds also support free and low-cost workshops for Equine Therapy program participants. Over the years, community partners have included Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, Shade Tree, Crossroads of Southern Nevada, Clark County School District, The Lionheart, The Nestled, the VA of Southern Nevada, Heroes in the Rough, Nevada Department of Veterans Services, Junior League of Las Vegas, and local charter schools.
One testimonial from an anonymous email sent to Horses4Heroes from Nellis AFB states that children with deployed parents might need a friend and describes a horse as “the best friend in the world” that can listen and make a child happy, and says that the organization “means more to these kids than you may think.” Another anonymous email from Nellis AFB describes how parents who are deployed may worry about their children and says that knowing their kids are enjoying themselves and not thinking about the war or their parents’ welfare may help those parents worry less, which the writer connects to helping them fight better and giving them a better chance at staying alive, concluding that “now H4H is helping protect our country.”
